GETTING TO KNOW EILEEN

Eileen St. George is a senior international educator with extensive experience managing large, complex education projects. She has over 25 years working in education in development, serving in both long and short term technical advisory positions in over thirteen countries. She was appointed Director of the Education in Conflict Practice Area following her return after five years in Jordan where she served as Chief of Party for USAID’s flagship education reform program.

Beyond your job title, please explain your role at Creative.

Returning from fieldwork, having been overseas from early 2006 to mid-2014, one role I gladly take on is further bridging field-based realities with the home office support functions as well as program design and implementation strategies.  I lead a team of very able professionals and aim to serve to enrich, enable and resource the team to allow them to perform to their best in creating and implementing education programs for those children most at risk of losing their opportunities to learn.

When did you join Creative?

I first joined Creative in July of 2002. In 2006, I took a sojourn from Creative as I moved to Southeast Asia. I returned to Creative in 2009 in Jordan. I first met Charito in 1993 through my work on the U.S. Coalition for Education for All, for which Charito served as a board member. I was inspired by her vision and commitment to education for the children we serve and the humble and heartfelt way in which she communicated this.

Please tell us about your area(s) of expertise.

I started as an elementary and special education teacher, but through international experience, interest and further study transitioned into education in development. I furthered my studies shifting to instructional systems design to underpin my efforts to assist ministries of education in the development of more efficient and effective public schooling systems. While I still enjoy training of teachers and offering direct support to schools and classrooms, my current work has focused on helping education ministries define, negotiate and fulfill their policy, systems and capacity needs.

Do you have an accomplishment or programmatic result or activity that you are particularly proud of?

It is very difficult to narrow it down to one. I have had the privilege of managing some incredibly worthwhile projects with exceptionally talented and committed teams. The Afghanistan Primary Education Program was one of those projects that may come only once in a lifetime where we felt we were in the right place at the right time. In 2002 it was a time of optimism and action for improving access to education for children. I remember sitting in a mosque in Kunduz with a community of men filling the space and listening to the collective voices expressing to me the means by which they could support bringing education into the community.

Another very rewarding experience was my five years in Jordan with Education Reform Support Program, seeing the project from start-up to close-out. The project was implemented at a time when the country was seeking to progress their education reform in the midst of economic and political strain confronting the region. My team and our ministry counterparts grew together as one team to address common goals through a united front to surmount the challenges and take advantage of opportunities. Jordan truly raised the bar for me on the type of relationship that should exist between any education reform project and the hosting ministry of education.

    My professional travels have taken me to Afghanistan, Burundi, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Uganda, United States, and Vietnam.
