Director, Transnational Initiatives
GETTING TO KNOW SID
Sid Balman leads Creative’s Transnational Initiatives team where supports the organization’s global work on projects related to countering violent extremism, community-driven crime reduction, education and more.
Beyond your job title, please explain your role at Creative.
I wear two hats at Creative as Director of Transnational Initiatives, a new division that focuses on issues that bridge developed and developing world concerns and explores resources in some non-traditional areas. My top-level priorities are incubating this new unit in a way that enhances and draws upon the expertise of other units and pursuing new types of programming that adapts our deep experience in some new areas.
It is hard to come up with a few pithy words that adequately capture the deep satisfaction of working on issues with such immediate importance for the safety of people everywhere, such as programs in the developed world to identify and mitigate drivers of radicalism and violence.
Do you have an accomplishment or programmatic result or activity that you are particularly proud of?
Much of my professional life has been entrepreneurial, and it is gratifying that my success in past ventures is exactly what brought us together when Creative was exploring this new transnational approach. It was also no small accomplishment to survive the 1990s as a war correspondent for United Press International, and to be instrumental post-9-11 in the creation of MDG-related campaigns—such as the ONE Campaign and the Global Partnership for Effective Assistance —that have fundamentally altered the landscape of international development.
What is it that drew you to the company?
My professional life has been driven by my instincts about the people with whom I work and conduct business. Creative is a family business, and it is the core values I share with the Kruvant family that drew me to this position. That, and the unique opportunity they offered me to build a business within an existing enterprise, taking advantage of 40 years of scale and experience in this industry.
Business development strategy, civil-military relations, digital/social media strategy, transnational radicalism, counter-threat messaging, campaigning, and content development.
