Renuka Pillay (1959-2019)
Dedicated educator, courageous social activist, cherished  colleague, and beloved friend

Creative mourns the unexpected loss of our long-time colleague and friend Renuka Pillay. We are shocked and saddened by the news of her passing. Renuka was a multi-talented education specialist and activist for social change in Africa. She was actively engaged in the fight against Apartheid and devoted her forty-year career to increasing education opportunities and improving the lives of children, adolescents and adults across Africa, India, the UK and the US.

Renuka served Creative with distinction in many capacities since 2000, including as Chief of Party in Uganda (the REPLICA and UNITY projects) and Tanzania (TZ21), Project Director for Zambia (ZAMFAM), and our East Africa Representative. More recently, Renuka had returned to Uganda to serve as the Performance Improvement Team Lead for the DFID-funded Strengthening Education Systems for Improved Learning (SESIL) project.

We cannot express with words the pain and sense of loss felt throughout the halls at Creative. Our thoughts and prayers are with Renuka’s family.

Please be on the lookout for upcoming memorial services in Uganda and Washington, D.C. in Renuka’s honor.
